I love Instagram and always recommend to my retail clients that if they’re not already on there, they need to be on Instagram.
Why?
Almost any retail business can use Instagram to reach new customers, tell their story, build a community, partner with influencers, boost sales with Instagram shopping and drive traffic to their website or brick-and-mortar location.
However, many retailers may find themselves overwhelmed by all the Instagram features and unsure how to utilise them effectively within their social media strategy. What is better? Instagram Reels vs Posts? Or stories? It can be complicated and confusing when you are trying to effectively market your business.
So in this blog, we’ll explore the key differences between Instagram posts, Instagram Stories, and Instagram Reels, and how using them correctly can transform followers into customers.
Instagram Posts: See these as your shop window
Instagram posts form the backbone of your content strategy, offering a permanent presence on your profile.
I always tell clients that your Instagram grid is your shop window. It should always be the best representation of YOU!
It’s the first thing that people see when they land on your profile so you need to make sure you stop the scroll.
How?
High-quality visuals
Well-taken images and videos are crucial for grabbing attention and making a lasting impression.
Make sure your images are in focus, are well-lit and sell the dream.
Engaging captions
Craft compelling captions that tell a story, evoke emotions, and encourage interaction with your followers is key.
Ask questions to create responses which will in turn help you build connections with your followers.
Consistency
When I talk about consistency, I mean both from a posting schedule as well a brand perspective which includes:
- If you’re taking photos, make sure they all have the same feel using the same filters (if you’re using any)
- When creating graphics use the same fonts as well as your brand colours
- Ensure you use the same tone of voice throughout all your content
This will keep your followers engaged and build a reliable brand presence.
I always recommend posting at least 2-3 times a week so that when anyone falls on your page they can see your latest products as well as being reassured that you’re active and open for business.
And don’t forget to tell your followers how they can buy from you! Either direct them to your shop or online.
When users first land on your Instagram page, the first thing they see are your posts so it’s important to get them right!
Now that we understand a bit more about posts, next we will look at having a more personal and immersive experience with your users through stories and the main differences between instagram posts vs stories.
Instagram Stories: Tell your story on Instagram Stories and take your followers on a journey
Instagram Stories provide a more ephemeral and immersive experience, allowing you to take your followers on a journey.
This is your warm audience and they could be ready to buy from you!!!!!
It’s your opportunity to make them love you, your content and whatever you’re selling.
This is where you build up your KNOW/LIKE/TRUST and can turn your followers into customers.
Here are my Instagram Story top tips
– Show the behind-the-scenes glimpses: Showcase the inner workings of your business, such as product creation, team activities, or events. This humanises your brand and fosters a sense of authenticity and connection. People are naturally nosey and love seeing what happens behind the scenes.
– Make the interactive features your friend: Utilise features like polls, quizzes, and question stickers to encourage engagement and gather valuable feedback from your audience. People love a good sticker.
– Create limited-time offers to your Close Friends only tab: Create a sense of urgency and exclusivity by offering time-sensitive promotions or discounts exclusively through Stories.
– Story Highlights: Curate your best Stories into Highlights, allowing new followers to explore your most important content even after it disappears. These can act like your website tabs.
Try and aim to post 1-2 Stories a day and did you know that you can schedule Stories too?
So remember to tell your story with Instagram Stories.
Next up we will have a look at Instagram Reels and what the difference is between Instagram Stories vs Reels, which are a great way to capture the attention of new users.
Instagram Reels: Find new followers by being captivating and entertaining on Instagram Reels.
Instagram Reels are short, vertical videos that provide an excellent opportunity to showcase your creativity and entertain your audience.
You can show your playful side, educate your audience or create an emotional connection.
Did you know that 20% of all Instagram activity took place on Reels last year?
Reels also have a longer shelf life and can be shown to new people two or three weeks after they’ve been posted. So they definitely need to be part of your Instagram content strategy.
Here are my Instagram Reels top tips
- Be clear on your messaging and what you want to be known for. If you’ve got a gorgeous gift shop, there’s probably not much point posting a Reel about what you had for tea last night.
- Stop the scroll with either a clear hook or utilise Instagram Reels’ editing tools to create visually appealing and captivating content that grabs attention.
- Be consistent with your branding/filters.
- Content is all around you so remember to be taking footage all the time so that you’ve got a bank of content ready to go. And make sure to film vertically and not in landscape format otherwise you’ll have the dreaded black top and bottom.
- Nail the basics – great content needs great lighting and to be well framed.
- Make your Reels accessible – if you’re speaking make sure to add captions.
- Showcase your products or knowledge – offer valuable information in bite-sized formats to establish yourself as an expert in your industry.
- If you’ve got products to sell try demonstrations: highlight your products’ features and benefits through engaging and visually appealing demonstrations. Or even film yourself unboxing your latest product.
- Don’t forget to show your face – although your products are key, people buy from people and want to know the face behind the business so don’t be afraid to show it off! Social media is social after all.
Remember that you might be discovered by your Reel so create ones that showcase you and what you sell.
And if you’re new to Instagram Reels try to aim to make ONE a week and as your confidence grows, you’ll want to make more!
Now you should understand the main differences between Instagram Reels vs Posts vs Stories and how to use them to boost your business growth! The next step is tying them all together with strategic Instagram content.
The Power of Strategic Content
To convert followers into customers, it’s essential to approach your Instagram content strategically.
However you need to make sure your overarching social media strategy is in place too
Here are my social media strategy top tips:
- Know your audience: Understand your target audience’s preferences, needs, and pain points to tailor your content accordingly.
- Storytelling: Craft a compelling narrative across your posts, Stories, and Reels to engage your audience emotionally and build a connection. Take them on that journey.
- Call to action (CTA): Prompt your followers to take specific actions, such as visiting your website, making a purchase, or signing up for your newsletter.
- Cross-promotion: Integrate your posts, Stories, and Reels to create a cohesive brand experience that encourages followers to explore different formats.
Mastering the art of Instagram’s different content formats—Reels, Posts and Stories—is instrumental in turning your followers into loyal paying customers.
By strategically leveraging each format’s unique strengths and tailoring your content to the customer journey, you can maximise your reach, engagement, and ultimately conversions.
When you are thinking about how to use Instagram Reels vs Posts vs Stories remember that they are different tools that can reach, and grow, your audience in different ways.
Remember, consistency, authenticity, and a well-crafted content strategy are key to harnessing the true power of Instagram.
