Are you randomly posting to your social media platforms?
Do you struggle to know what to say and to who and where?
Are you jumping on every trend or awareness days, with no idea why?
Are you not seeing any results and feeling overwhelmed?
If you’re answering “YES” to any of these then I’m going to assume that you’ve not got a social media strategy in place and without one you’re going to struggle to get the results you want (and if you’re not on social media, did you know that 71% of small-to-mid-sized businesses use social media to market themselves, and 52% post once a day, so you’re missing out!)
So, here’s why you need a social media strategy.
First up…..
What is a social media strategy for small business?
Simply put, a social media strategy is a plan that outlines:
- Your overall goals from social media, for example, brand awareness or to increase website traffic
- Your ideal target audience, deep-diving into who they are, where they hang out on social, their pain points and how you solve them
- Your tone of voice
- Your content strategy (I’ll cover this in a separate blog!)
- What platforms you should be on
- And how you’re going to measure your success.
So why do you need a social media strategy for your small business?
It doesn’t matter whether you’re a solopreneur or a big brand, you need a strategy to follow and this is why:
A social media strategy:
1. Gives you direction
If you don’t know WHERE your social media is going, how will you know HOW to get there and WHEN you get there?
Without that road map, you’re just wasting your time.
Who cares if people visit your website if they never buy or come in to visit you?
Who cares if your post gets 1,000 likes if it never turns into sales?
You must know your end goal, and what it takes to get there. Only then can you figure out how social media can support those goals.
It provides a blueprint that you can follow to keep your marketing consistent, on task, and relevant to your target audience.
2. Helps you understand who your ideal customer is
Creating your ideal customer means you know who they are, what they do, whether they have kids, what social media platforms they’ll hang out on, their pain points and so on.
Having these personas in place means you can target them more effectively with content that really resonates with them.
3. Makes you focus your efforts
No more posting and hoping. As, you know who you’re talking to, where they hang out on social, and how you solve their problems.
4. Saves time
Knowing what you want to say, to who, and how. This means you can batch-create content saving you a HUGE amount of time. Meaning you can spend more time on your business.
5. It allows you to track your performance
You can test, measure, reflect and refine your content according to your goals, resulting in content that works.
6. You’ll be consistent
If you’re confident about your content, you’ll be confident about showing up and being visible.
Having a strong, organic social media presence is key to success.
Failure to maintain consistency is one big reason social media accounts stop growing.
So what are you waiting for?
With a solid strategy, it becomes easy to see what is working and what isn’t.
You’ll have an end goal that you can work towards and makes your time on social media enjoyable as you’ll see the results.
